I Made Supena

I Made Supena was born in 1970 in Singapadu, Bali in Indonesia and graduated from Arts and Design Udayana University (now ISI) in 1997. While growing up in an artistic family and being great influenced by his father, a renowned wooden sculptor, Supena showed his talent in painting as a child. Inspired by the nature, Supena takes the fragments of the nature back to his studio, composing them in black and white lines, and expressing his respect to nature in a vastness of colors. With a grasp of material, he employed oil paint, acrylic and foils to create a half-realistic and half-abstract painting. The colors, shape, form and textures in his canvas correspond in concord as well as in discord. As a well known abstract painter, Supena ever states, “Abstractism is the beginning, never the end.”

Supena’s art is deeply rooted in Bali tradition. Modern Bali culture evolves from ancient tradition of living and religion. Balinese spiritual and material culture runs deep in the artist and his art, and a nature of inner truth inherits. His painting embodies images, ritual, nature and supper nature (sekala niskala). For Supena, as an artist, he dreams a lifetime to utilize his gift to empower every canvas the supernatural known in Balias sekala niskala. However, the most extraordinary aspect of his paintings is the hidden energy underneath, what is fulfilled in the sensual rhythms, rich colors and textures and transcend all borders. Supena was awarded for the best work UNUD/HMJS. Works collected by the National Art Museum of China (NAMOC) Weltkulturen Museum in Frankfrut (Museum of World Cultures).
